The fist evidence of snowboarding as early as 1910 when people started going down hills on boards made of ply wood or wooden planks from logs with horse reigns and fishing string to steer the board. Modern snowboarding began in 1965 when Sherman Poppen made a toy for his daughter who was 10 when he saw her standing on her sled and riding down a hill. He went inside and tied 2 skies together for his daughter Wendy. Later he made a better version of the 2 skies tied together and called it the Snurfer. Sherman was born in Muskegon , MI on March 25, 1930.

He owned an industrial business. That sold gases and welding supplies in Muskegon, Michigan. He had a wife named Nancy and he had 2 daughters named Wendy who was 10 years old and Laurie who was 5 years old.
In 1965 The Snurfer was put into production by Brunswick they worked with Sherman to build a better board made of the wood they used for bowling ball gutters. In ten years 1,000,000 Snurfers were sold for about $15 each. That is about $15,000,000 total sold in ten years! In 1970 Dimitrije Milovich started to develop snowboards with nylon straps. From 1968 through the late 1970s snurfer racing competitions were held in Muskegon Michigan. In 1977 Jake Burton founded his own snowboard company. The snowboards they produced were made of small flexible wooden boards with water ski bindings. They sold for $38 each. In 1779 There was an annual snurfer contest in Michigan. Pro snurfer Paul Graves preformed a freestyle demo. It had 4 sliding 360s and a flip. Jake tried to enter in it with his own snowboard that was not a snurfer. He was not aloud to be in the contest. Paul, Jake, and other people protested for him to be able to compete. Jake was aloud to compete in the end. In 1782 the first NSC was held in Suicide Six near Woodstock, Vermont. In 1987 the first European contest was held, a new sport was born.
